Short answer
You need an unconditional offer and a CAS from a licensed university, English at CEFR B2 for degree study, a TB certificate, and money held for 28 days. As of 15 September 2026, GOV.UK lists a £558 visa fee, a £776 a year health surcharge, and living costs of £1,529 a month in London or £1,171 elsewhere, for up to 9 months.

How do you get a place at a UK university from Pakistan?
The visa comes last. First you need an offer from a university that holds a student sponsor licence, and the route to that offer depends on your level of study. If you are still deciding between countries, the comparison of study destinations sets the UK against the other main options.
Undergraduate: apply through UCAS
Bachelor’s degrees are applied for through UCAS, the central admissions service. You can choose up to five courses on one application. For September 2027 entry, UCAS says applications for Oxford, Cambridge and most courses in medicine, dentistry and veterinary science must arrive by 18:00 UK time on 15 October 2026. For almost everything else, the equal consideration deadline is 18:00 UK time on 13 January 2027. International students follow the same deadlines, but you should apply earlier, because the CAS and visa still lie ahead.
Pakistani applicants usually apply with A levels or with FSc and Matric results. Many universities list country-specific entry requirements for Pakistan on their websites, and some expect a foundation year for FSc holders on certain courses. Read the page for your exact course rather than a general international page.
Postgraduate: apply directly to the university
Most master’s and PhD applications go straight to the university through its own online portal. You upload your degree transcripts, a personal statement, references and a CV. Universities may ask for your degree to be verified, and HEC attestation of your Pakistani degree and transcripts is often worth arranging early, because it takes time in Lahore, Islamabad and Karachi.
Intakes
September is the main intake for most courses. Many universities also run a January intake, and a few offer others, but availability varies by course. Confirm the intake on the course page before you plan your finances, because the intake decides when your money must be ready and which funding figures apply to you.
What is a CAS, and what does it contain?
A Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies, or CAS, is an electronic record your university creates once you hold an unconditional offer. You receive a reference number, which you enter on your visa application. GOV.UK says you must apply for your visa within 6 months of receiving your CAS.
Paragraph ST 23.1 of Appendix Student says the CAS must contain the course title, academic level, start and end dates, weekly study hours, study address and course fees. It also records the documents the university used to assess your academic and English ability. Those documents are the ones you must have with you when you apply.
Check your CAS before you rely on it
Mistakes on a CAS become mistakes in your visa application. Check the spelling of your name against your passport. Check that fees already paid are recorded, because that figure reduces the money you must show. Check that the English assessment method matches the evidence you hold. If anything is wrong, ask the university to correct it before you apply.
What English level do you need for a UK Student visa?
There are two separate tests here, and students often confuse them. The university sets its own English entry requirement, such as an overall IELTS score. The visa sets a minimum level on the CEFR scale. You must meet both.
The visa requirement
According to GOV.UK, degree-level study or above needs English equivalent to CEFR B2 in reading, writing, speaking and listening. Below degree level, such as a foundation course at a college, the requirement is CEFR B1.
When you need a Secure English Language Test
For a degree, a university may assess your English itself and state on your CAS the method it used, with the test details if a test was part of it. If the university does not make that assessment, you need a Secure English Language Test from an approved provider, such as IELTS for UKVI. Below degree level, GOV.UK says you must pass an approved Secure English Language Test.
Exemptions
GOV.UK exempts nationals of listed majority English-speaking countries. Pakistan is not on that list. You may also be exempt if you hold a degree from outside the UK that was taught in English, which usually needs confirmation through Ecctis, or UK school qualifications such as GCSEs or A levels. Do not assume that O and A levels sat in Pakistan count in the same way; ask the university and check GOV.UK first.
How much money do you need to show for a UK Student visa?
Pakistan is not among the countries whose nationals are excused from providing financial evidence under paragraph ST 22.1 of Appendix Student, so you should expect to show your funds in full. The GOV.UK money page sets out two parts: your outstanding course fees for the first year, as stated on your CAS, and living costs for each month of the course, up to 9 months.
| Figure | Course in London | Course outside London |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly amount now | £1,529 | £1,171 |
| 9-month maximum now | £13,761 | £10,539 |
| Monthly amount for applications on or after 30 November 2026 | £1,570 | £1,203 |
| 9-month maximum from 30 November 2026 | £14,130 | £10,827 |
| Each dependant, per month (no change announced) | £845 | £680 |
| Accommodation deposit paid to the university that can be offset | Up to £1,529 now; up to £1,570 from 30 November 2026 | Same as London |
The change comes from the statement of changes HC 584, published on 3 September 2026. It takes effect on 30 November 2026. Applications made before that date are decided under the rules in force on 29 November 2026. If you are applying for a January 2027 intake, you will most likely be applying after the change, so plan on the higher figures.
The 28-day and 31-day rules
The money must be held for at least 28 consecutive days. Under Appendix Finance, the most recent evidence must be dated within 31 days before the date of application, and the 28 days are counted back from the closing balance on that evidence. One day below the required balance breaks the period. A statement that ends 35 days before you apply fails, however large the balance.
Which accounts are acceptable
Appendix Finance says funds in an institution will not count if the Home Office cannot verify them, if the bank is not regulated in its country, or if it does not keep electronic records. Ask your bank in Pakistan for statements that can be verified, and make sure the account gives immediate access to the money. Money in rupees is converted at the OANDA spot rate on the date you apply, so a rupee fall between your statement and your application can leave you short. Keep a margin.
Parents, loans and official sponsors
- Funds in a parent’s or legal guardian’s account count if you prove the relationship and include their written consent.
- A loan counts if it comes from a government, a government-sponsored student loan company, or an academic or educational loans scheme.
- An official financial sponsor can be the UK government, your national government, the British Council, an international organisation, international company, university or independent school.
- Money held by uncles, cousins or a family business is not covered by the parent and guardian provision, so check the rules before relying on it.
What does the Student visa itself cost?
As of 15 September 2026, GOV.UK and the Home Office fee table in force since 8 April 2026 both list £558 for a Student visa application from outside the UK. The fee table from 8 October 2026 shows the same figure.
You also pay the Immigration Health Surcharge when you apply. The GOV.UK surcharge page lists £776 a year for students and their dependants. It is charged on the full length of your visa, not only the course. A part year of more than 6 months costs a full year. Under paragraph ST 25.3, a course of 12 months or more comes with up to 1 month before it and 4 months after it, so a one-year master’s produces a visa of well over a year. Work out your own figure from the dates on your CAS, and check the amount the application form shows before you pay.
| Charge | Amount | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Student visa application fee | £558 | Per applicant; unchanged in the 8 October 2026 table |
| Immigration Health Surcharge, student rate | £776 per year | Charged on the whole visa length |
| TB test | Set by the clinic | Paid to the approved clinic in Pakistan |
| ATAS certificate | Free | Only for certain postgraduate subjects |
| Graduate visa, later on | £937 | Plus £1,035 a year surcharge |
These charges are small beside tuition and living costs, and none is refunded if you are refused. Budget them in pounds, not rupees, because the rupee figure depends on the exchange rate on the day you pay.
Do you need a TB test or an ATAS certificate?
The TB test
The GOV.UK TB test page requires a test if you are coming to the UK for 6 months or more and have lived in a listed country. Pakistan is on the list of countries, so almost every Pakistani degree student needs one. The test must be done at a UK-approved clinic. The GOV.UK list for Pakistan, last updated on 20 February 2026, names clinics in Islamabad, Lahore, Karachi and Mirpur. The certificate is valid for 6 months from the date of your x-ray, so do not take it too early.
ATAS for sensitive postgraduate subjects
The Academic Technology Approval Scheme covers study or research in certain sensitive technology subjects at master’s level or above. The ATAS guidance exempts nationals of a short list of countries, and Pakistan is not one of them. Subjects in engineering, physics, computing and some life sciences are the usual candidates, but the test depends on the course’s CAH3 code, which your university gives you.
ATAS is free. GOV.UK says it takes at least 30 working days, and longer from April to August. You must have the certificate before you submit your visa application, and you need a new one if your course content or supervisor changes. If your offer mentions ATAS, apply the same week.
Can you bring your spouse or children to the UK in 2026?
For most Pakistani students, no. The GOV.UK family page allows dependants only if you are one of these:
- a government-sponsored student starting a course longer than 6 months;
- a full-time student on a postgraduate course at RQF level 7 or above lasting 9 months or longer, where, for courses starting on or after 1 January 2024, the course is a PhD, another doctorate or a research-based higher degree.
A taught MSc, MBA or LLM does not qualify. A PhD in Glasgow or a government-funded scholarship can. Where dependants are allowed, each one needs £845 a month in London or £680 a month outside London, for up to 9 months, on top of your own funds. HC 584 does not change those dependant figures. If a spouse wants to come in their own right, the UK visit visa guide explains the rules for short visits, which are a different thing from living with you.
Can you work while studying in the UK?
Paragraph ST 26.1 of Appendix Student sets the limits. At degree level or above, with a higher education provider that has a track record of compliance, you may work up to 20 hours a week in term time and full time outside term time. Below degree level the term-time limit is 10 hours a week. The GOV.UK conditions page adds that you cannot be self-employed, work as a professional sportsperson or sports coach, or claim public funds.
Your university’s term dates decide when term time ends, not your own timetable. Keep payslips and a record of your weekly hours. Working beyond your conditions puts your current permission and your later applications at risk. Part-time wages help with rent and food, but they cannot count towards the money you show at the application stage.
How long can you stay in the UK after graduating?
The Graduate visa lets you stay and work, or look for work, after completing an eligible course. Paragraph GR 8.1 of Appendix Graduate and the GOV.UK Graduate visa page give the length:
- 2 years for bachelor’s and master’s graduates who apply on or before 31 December 2026;
- 18 months for those graduates if they apply on or after 1 January 2027;
- 3 years for PhD and other doctoral graduates.
You apply from inside the UK, while you hold Student permission, after your university has told the Home Office you completed the course. That means the date you apply for the Graduate visa counts, not the date you started studying. A student starting a master’s in September 2026 or later will finish after 1 January 2027, so should plan around 18 months. As of 15 September 2026, the fee is £937, plus a surcharge of £1,035 a year.
Many graduates use this time to find a sponsoring employer. The UK Skilled Worker visa guide explains what that next step asks for.
When should you apply, and how long does a decision take?
From outside the UK, the earliest you can apply is 6 months before your course starts. On its processing times page, GOV.UK gives 3 weeks for a Student visa. That is a usual time, not a promise. The GOV.UK apply page says you may be able to pay for a faster decision; check whether the option appears when you book.
The visa usually starts up to 1 month before a course of more than 6 months, or up to 1 week before a shorter course. You cannot travel before the start date on your visa. Once granted, your permission is held as an eVisa, which you access through a UKVI account.
Working back from a September start, most students I see need the unconditional offer by June, the CAS in July, and the money in place by early July to complete 28 days before a late July or August application. Every week of slack protects you against a delayed CAS or a TB clinic backlog.
How do you apply, step by step?
The application is made online on GOV.UK. The GOV.UK visa centre finder sends Pakistani applicants to VFS Global, where you book the appointment to prove your identity. The GOV.UK documents page lists your passport and CAS as essential, with proof of funds, TB results, an ATAS certificate and sponsor consent where they apply. If you want to see how a consultation with me runs before you start, read how it works.
Secure an unconditional offer
Apply through UCAS for a bachelor’s degree, or directly to the university for most postgraduate courses. Meet every academic and English condition in your offer, so the university can make it unconditional.
Pay any deposit and receive your CAS
Pay the deposit the university asks for, send the documents it requests, and receive your CAS reference number. Check every detail on it: your name, course, dates, fees paid and how your English was assessed.
Hold the money for 28 days
Keep the full amount for outstanding fees and living costs in an acceptable account for at least 28 consecutive days. Use the figures in force on the day you will apply, and apply within 31 days of the statement’s closing date.
Get your TB certificate and any ATAS clearance
Book a TB test at a UK-approved clinic in Pakistan. If your postgraduate course needs ATAS, apply for it well ahead, because you must have the certificate before you submit your visa application.
Apply online and pay the fee and surcharge
Apply on GOV.UK no earlier than 6 months before your course starts. Enter your CAS number, answer every question accurately, including any past refusals, and pay the application fee and the healthcare surcharge.
Prove your identity at the visa centre
Book your appointment with VFS Global, the provider GOV.UK lists for Pakistan. Take your passport, give your fingerprints and photo, and submit documents as your booking instructions describe.
Receive the decision and plan your travel
GOV.UK says a decision usually takes 3 weeks. Once your eVisa is granted, check its dates, then book flights. You cannot travel before the start date on your visa.
What goes wrong most often?
Breaking the 28-day or 31-day rule
A balance that dips for two days after a fee payment, or a statement that closes too long before the application date, fails the rule regardless of how much money the family has. Plan the timing of fee payments and statement dates together, on paper, before any money moves.
Using the old maintenance figures after 30 November 2026
Students preparing in October for a January intake often calculate on £1,171 a month. If they apply on or after 30 November 2026, the figure is £1,203 outside London and £1,570 in London. A shortfall of a few hundred pounds is enough for a refusal.
Funds that cannot be explained
A father’s account with a small monthly salary, then a deposit of PKR 8,000,000 two weeks before the 28-day period begins, raises obvious questions. The rules ask for the balance to be held, and caseworkers can also consider whether you are a genuine student. Keep sale deeds, transfer records or business evidence that explain large sums.
English evidence that does not match the CAS
If your CAS says your English was assessed through a particular test and you cannot produce that certificate, or the scores fall short of B2 in one component, the application is exposed. Line up the CAS wording and your documents before you pay the fee.
Trusting an agent who promises a result
No one can guarantee a UK visa. An agent offering arranged bank statements, fake experience letters or a quiet way around the English rule puts your future applications at risk, because deception can lead to a long ban. Read the guide to checking a visa consultant in Pakistan before you pay anyone. If you have already been refused, the student visa refusal guide explains how to read the letter.
A realistic example
Take a hypothetical student, Hamza, from Faisalabad. He is an illustration, not a real client, and the fee figures are invented for the example. He holds a BS in Computer Science and has an unconditional offer for a one-year MSc at a university in Manchester, starting in late January 2027.
- October 2026. The university confirms that his course does not need ATAS and that it will assess his English for the CAS using the IELTS result it accepted. He pays a £5,000 deposit towards a £22,000 tuition fee.
- Early November. He works out that he will apply in December, after 30 November. He needs £17,000 in outstanding fees plus £1,203 for 9 months, which is £10,827, making £27,827. His father moves the rupee equivalent, with a margin, into his own account and leaves it untouched.
- Mid November. Hamza takes his TB test at an approved clinic in Lahore and receives his CAS. He checks that the deposit is recorded.
- Mid December. The father’s statement shows the balance held from 10 November to 10 December. Hamza applies within days, with the statement, a Family Registration Certificate and his father’s signed consent, then books his VFS Global appointment.
Every figure fits the rules in force on the day he applies, and every document tells the same story.
The version that goes wrong
Now suppose Hamza calculates on £1,171 a month because that was the figure on a website in October. His father pays part of the balance to a relative mid-way through November, then tops it up again. The statement closes on 5 November but Hamza only applies on 15 December, outside the 31-day window. Each of these problems is fixable on its own if caught early. Found by the caseworker, any one of them can be enough for a refusal.

Frequently asked questions
How much bank balance do I need for a UK Student visa?
Your outstanding first-year fees shown on your CAS, plus living costs for up to 9 months. As of 15 September 2026, that is £1,529 a month in London or £1,171 elsewhere. For applications made on or after 30 November 2026, the amounts rise to £1,570 and £1,203. Hold it for 28 consecutive days.
What is the 28-day rule for UK student bank statements?
The required money must stay in the account for at least 28 consecutive days. The last day of that period must fall within 31 days before you apply. If the balance drops below the required amount on any day, the 28 days start again, so leave a margin above the minimum.
Can my father’s bank account be used for my UK Student visa?
Yes. Appendix Finance allows funds held by a parent or legal guardian, if you prove the relationship and provide their written consent to use the money. For a Pakistani family, a birth certificate or NADRA Family Registration Certificate usually shows the relationship. An uncle’s or brother’s account does not qualify in the same way.
Do I need IELTS for a UK Student visa from Pakistan?
Not always. For degree-level study you need English equivalent to CEFR B2. You can show it with a Secure English Language Test, or your university can assess it and record that on your CAS. Below degree level you need B1 through an approved test. Always check what your university accepts first.
How much is the UK Student visa fee from Pakistan?
As of 15 September 2026, GOV.UK lists £558 to apply from outside the UK. The fee table dated 8 October 2026 shows no change. You also pay the healthcare surcharge at £776 for each year, and the fee is not a guide to your total cost, which is mostly tuition and living costs.
How early can I apply for a UK Student visa?
The earliest you can apply from outside the UK is 6 months before your course starts. Your CAS must also have been issued no more than 6 months before you apply. GOV.UK says you will usually get a decision within 3 weeks, so applying two to three months ahead is sensible.
Do Pakistani students need a TB test for the UK?
Yes, if you are coming for 6 months or more, which covers almost every degree. Pakistan is on the GOV.UK list, and the test must be done at an approved clinic. GOV.UK lists clinics in Islamabad, Lahore, Karachi and Mirpur. The certificate is valid for 6 months from the date of your x-ray.
Can I take my wife to the UK on a Student visa?
Only in limited cases. For postgraduate courses starting on or after 1 January 2024, dependants are allowed only if the course is a PhD, another doctorate or a research-based higher degree. Government-sponsored students on courses longer than 6 months also qualify. Most taught master’s students cannot bring a spouse.
How many hours can Pakistani students work in the UK?
At degree level with a university that has a track record of compliance, Appendix Student allows up to 20 hours a week in term time and full-time work outside term time. Below degree level the term-time limit is 10 hours. You cannot be self-employed or work as a professional sportsperson or sports coach.
Is the UK Graduate visa still 2 years?
Only for applications made on or before 31 December 2026. For applications on or after 1 January 2027, bachelor’s and master’s graduates get 18 months. PhD and other doctoral graduates still get 3 years. You apply from inside the UK after your university confirms you completed the course.
Does a UK Student visa refusal stop me applying again?
No, you can apply again, but a new application needs a new fee and must answer each reason in the refusal letter. Declare the earlier refusal honestly on every future form. Resubmitting the same bank statements and the same explanations usually leads to the same outcome, so fix the underlying problem first.
Can Ch. Bilal Rasheed help me study in the UK?
Yes. The first consultation is free, in Lahore, on WhatsApp or by phone. He advises on courses, universities and admissions, and checks your documents against the published rules. No one can guarantee a visa. He is a qualified lawyer in Pakistan, and not registered with the UK Immigration Advice Authority, formerly the OISC.
