Short answer
Pakistani students need a long stay ‘D’ study visa for a course of more than 3 months. As of 18 September 2026, you must enrol on a full-time course on the Interim List of Eligible Programmes (ILEP), pay your fees (in full, or at least EUR 6,000), show access to EUR 10,000 for living costs, and hold private medical insurance. You apply on AVATS, submit at a VFS Global centre in Pakistan, and register for Stamp 2 within 90 days of arriving.

Which visa do Pakistani students need to study in Ireland?
It depends on the length of your course. Pakistani passport holders need a visa before they travel to Ireland, and Ireland is not part of the Schengen area, so a Schengen visa does not help.
Long stay ‘D’ visa for courses over 3 months
As of 18 September 2026, Immigration Service Delivery (ISD), part of Ireland’s Department of Justice, Home Affairs and Migration, says anyone who wants to study in Ireland for more than 3 months needs a long term study visa. That covers every degree, master’s and full-time English course. After arrival you register and receive Stamp 2 permission, shown on an Irish Residence Permit (IRP) card.
Short stay ‘C’ visa for short courses
If your course lasts less than 90 days, you apply for a short stay C visa instead. The rules and documents are close to a visit visa, and you must leave when it ends. The Ireland visit visa guide covers the short stay process, including the June 2026 change that removed appeals for short stay refusals.
If you are still deciding between countries, the comparison of study destinations sets Ireland beside the UK, Canada, Australia and others on cost, work rights and visa difficulty.
Which courses qualify for a Stamp 2 student permission?
Only full-time courses on the Interim List of Eligible Programmes, known as the ILEP. ISD’s student FAQ says permission is granted only if you enrol on and start a programme listed on the ILEP. Part-time and distance courses do not qualify.
What the ILEP covers
- English language programmes;
- higher education programmes, such as bachelor’s and master’s degrees;
- professional awards;
- foundation programmes.
ISD’s letter of acceptance rules add that the course must involve at least 15 hours of organised daytime tuition each week. A course that is not on the ILEP can lead to Stamp 2A instead, which carries no right to work at all.
The ILEP is not a quality badge
ISD says plainly that the ILEP does not guarantee the quality of a provider. Listed providers must meet certain standards: learner protection if a course closes, published refund and attendance policies, a full list of costs in advance, and no cash payments. They must also publish the names of the recruitment agents they work with. That last rule is useful. Check that your agent’s name appears on the college’s own list.
Time limits on the student route
As of 18 September 2026, ISD’s stamp conditions say students can study in Ireland for a maximum of 7 years in total. New English language students can hold permission for up to three courses of 8 months each, two years in all, and must then move to a higher education course on the ILEP. English language students must also attend at least 85% of classes and sit an exam at the end of each course.
Where do Pakistani students submit an Irish study visa application?
You complete the form online, then hand in your documents at a visa application centre in Pakistan. Your AVATS summary form is the final word on where your file goes, so read it before booking anything.
AVATS, the online form
AVATS is ISD’s Automated Visa Application and Tracking System. ISD says you should apply up to 3 months before your date of travel, and you must apply from your home country or where you legally live. Answer every question fully and honestly. The form produces a summary application form, which you print, sign and date and hand in with your documents.
VFS Global centres in Pakistan
As of 18 September 2026, VFS Global describes itself as the official partner of the Embassy of Ireland in Pakistan. Its Irish visa pages list application centres in Islamabad, Karachi and Lahore, open Monday to Friday, and Mirpur, open Monday to Wednesday. A VFS notice dated 18 March 2026 says you must attend your appointment within 30 days of submitting the online form, or the application is treated as withdrawn and you start again.
Is it still Abu Dhabi?
Many older blogs say Pakistani files go to the Irish Embassy in Abu Dhabi. As of 18 September 2026, ISD’s visa offices page, last updated on 22 May 2026, lists the countries the Abu Dhabi office accepts applications from, and Pakistan is not among them. I could not confirm from an official page which ISD office decides applications from Pakistan. Your summary form and your VFS booking tell you the route for your own file.
How much does an Irish study visa cost from Pakistan?
The visa fee itself is small. The real cost is the tuition you must pay before applying, the living money you must show, and the charges after you land.
| Item | Amount | When it applies |
|---|---|---|
| Visa fee, single entry | EUR 60 | Paid with the application; not refunded if refused |
| Visa fee, multiple entry | EUR 100 | Paid with the application; not refunded if refused |
| Tuition paid before applying | In full if under EUR 6,000; at least EUR 6,000 if higher | Before you apply for the visa |
| Living costs to show, one-year course | EUR 10,000 | Immediate access, shown in the visa file |
| Living costs, stay of 8 months or less | EUR 833 a month, up to EUR 6,665 | Shown in the visa file |
| First registration (IRP) | EUR 300 | At your registration appointment in Ireland |
| VFS service charge | Set by VFS | At the visa application centre |
Private medical insurance, flights and the first months of rent come on top. Irish rents, especially in Dublin, are high, and the EUR 10,000 figure is ISD’s estimate of a student’s cost of living for one academic year, not a promise that it will be enough. At current exchange rates these sums run into several million rupees, so check the day’s rate rather than trusting an old conversion.
How much money do you need to show for an Ireland student visa?
As of 18 September 2026, ISD’s student finances page says visa-required students must show immediate access to at least EUR 10,000 for the first year. You or your sponsors must also show ready access to EUR 10,000 for each later year, in addition to the course fees for those years.
| Course type | What you must show | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Degree or other course of one year or more | EUR 10,000 for year one | Plus EUR 10,000 and fees for each later year |
| English course or stay of 8 months or less | EUR 833 a month | Or EUR 6,665 in total, whichever is less |
| Degree students using an education bond | Bond of at least EUR 10,000 | Lodged with an approved payment service |
Your own bank statement
You must send an up-to-date statement covering the last six months, even if someone else is paying. ISD sets clear rules:
- statements on the bank’s headed paper, with no handwritten entries;
- internet printouts only if every page is stamped by the bank, with a bank letter confirming they are genuine;
- your name, address, account number and account type visible;
- every large or irregular deposit fully explained, such as a property sale or a matured savings certificate;
- a bank letter confirming access where the money sits in a deposit or savings account.
Credit cards are not accepted as evidence of funds. You must also complete ISD’s Summary of Finances form, which every long stay study applicant submits.
Sponsors: parents, relatives and friends
Ireland is more flexible than the UK here. A family member or friend may sponsor you, but you must list each sponsor, prove how you are related, and show how much each will give. For each sponsor you need six months of statements and evidence of income. For a salaried sponsor, ISD gives the example of an employer letter and 3 recent payslips. For a business owner, it asks for proof such as a registration certificate.
In a Pakistani file, that usually means a NADRA Family Registration Certificate or birth certificate for the relationship, and tax returns, NTN or chamber registration for a business. As a lawyer, the question I ask first is simple: can every rupee in the account be traced to a real source? A lump sum placed a few weeks before the application, with no paper trail, is the pattern visa officers look for.
The education bond for degree students
ISD runs a pilot that lets degree students, meaning courses at levels 7 to 10 of the Irish qualifications framework on the ILEP, lodge an education bond of at least EUR 10,000 instead of bank statements. The bond must stay in place from the visa application until you register in Ireland. ISD says the officer may still ask for more evidence, so keep your family’s statements ready anyway.
How do you prove your tuition fees are paid?
With a record of payment that reaches the college’s Irish bank account, or a receipt from an approved student fee payment service. ISD does not accept a promise to pay later.
- a copy of the electronic transfer to the college’s Irish account, showing the college’s name, address and bank details and yours;
- or a valid receipt from an approved payment service, such as the one ISD names as Pay to Study, formerly ISPS.
Where the fees are under EUR 6,000, you must pay them in full before applying. Where they are higher, you must pay at least EUR 6,000, and your letter of acceptance should show the amount paid. Colleges on the ILEP cannot take fees in cash. If you pay through an agent’s personal account, you have no proof that meets these rules, and no protection if the money disappears.
ISD’s student FAQ says that if your visa is refused, the college must process your refund request within 20 working days. Read the college’s refund policy before paying, so you know what it keeps.
What English test score do you need for an Ireland study visa?
ISD sets a minimum English standard for visa purposes, and your college sets its own, usually higher, entry score. You must meet both. The test certificate must be issued within 2 years of your expected course start date.
| Test | Foundation, preparatory or second level | All other courses |
|---|---|---|
| IELTS Academic or IELTS UKVI | 4.0 | 5.0 |
| PTE Academic | 30 | 30 |
| TOEFL iBT | 47 | 61 |
| Duolingo English Test | 55 | 75 |
| LanguageCert Academic | 40 | 60 |
English language course applicants do not have to send a test certificate with the application, but ISD says the visa officer may ask for other evidence of a basic level of English. If you need a preparatory English course before your degree, it must not exceed 6 months, you must send a study plan, and you must pay the fees for both the English course and the first year of the degree before applying.
Most Irish universities ask for a higher IELTS score than 5.0 for a degree. A certificate from a school in Pakistan saying you studied in English may satisfy a college, but for the visa I would always send a test result from an accepted provider.
What documents do you need for an Irish study visa from Pakistan?
ISD wants originals, in hard copy, in English or with a certified translation. Letters from organisations must be on headed paper, with a landline number, a website, a non-Yahoo, non-Hotmail email address and a handwritten signature.
ISD’s document list
- Passport. Valid for at least 12 months after your planned arrival, with copies of every page of old passports, if available.
- Two colour photos under 6 months old, signed on the back with your AVATS transaction number.
- Application letter with your reasons for coming, dates, any family in Ireland or the EU, and a commitment to obey the visa conditions, not rely on public services and leave when permission ends.
- Letter of acceptance confirming a full-time course of at least 15 hours of daytime tuition a week, the fees due and the fees paid.
- Proof of fee payment, as described above.
- Evidence of academic ability, such as transcripts and certificates.
- English test certificate.
- Finances, the Summary of Finances form and sponsor evidence.
- Private medical insurance evidence.
- Gap explanation and full employment history.
- Previous visa refusals for any country, with the original refusal letters.
The Pakistani paperwork around it
Irish colleges often ask for degrees attested by the Higher Education Commission (HEC), and school certificates such as Matric and FSc attested by the Inter Board Committee of Chairmen (IBCC), or for IBCC equivalence if you studied O and A levels. Ask your college which attestations it needs at admission, because fixing them later delays your offer.
ISD’s appeal rules say state-issued documents from outside the EEA, such as birth certificates, must be attested by the issuing country’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs to be accepted. If your file uses a birth certificate to prove a sponsor relationship, having it attested by Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs is a sensible step.
Declare every refusal
ISD says not disclosing a previous visa refusal will result in refusal. That includes a UK, Canadian or Schengen refusal from years ago. False or misleading documents can also lead to a ban of up to 5 years on Irish visas. If an agent suggests leaving a refusal off the form, stop working with that agent.
What medical insurance does an Irish student visa need?
All non-EEA students need private medical insurance covering accident, disease and hospital stays. You show it with the visa application and again when you register in Ireland.
- College group scheme. If your college arranges cover, the letter of acceptance must say so, confirm you paid for it and outline the cover.
- Individual policy bought in Ireland if you are not in a college scheme.
- Travel insurance for first-year students may be accepted at first registration if it covers the whole year, at least EUR 25,000 for accident and EUR 25,000 for disease, and any hospitalisation.
From the second year, travel insurance is not enough, and you must show you kept cover for the whole previous period. Cancelling your insurance after registering breaches your conditions.
How do you explain a gap in your education for an Irish visa?
ISD asks every long stay study applicant to account for any gap since their last full-time education, up to the date of the application. You must also give your full employment history, because the officer wants to see what filled each gap.
What a good explanation contains
- a month-by-month timeline from your last course to today;
- employer letters on headed paper, with dates, role and salary, backed by salary entries in your bank statement;
- for family reasons or illness, a short account with supporting papers, such as medical records;
- for failed attempts at entry tests or earlier study plans, an honest line saying so.
When the course is a change of direction
ISD’s application letter rules say that if your new course does not naturally follow your education or work, you must give valid reasons and support them with evidence. A commerce graduate who spent four years in banking and now wants a master’s in data analytics can explain that well, with a job description and a certificate course. A graduate who jumps to an unrelated one-year diploma with no reason given looks like someone using study as a route to something else.
How long does an Irish study visa take from Pakistan?
ISD says applicants can expect a decision within about 8 weeks of the date the application reaches the visa office, embassy or consulate. It warns that missing documents, verification and personal circumstances can make it longer.
- You can apply up to 3 months before your date of travel.
- ISD may send your passport for authentication, contact the Irish police, or check with other agencies, including INTERPOL.
- ISD asks applicants not to buy tickets before they know the outcome.
For a September intake, that means fees paid and funds in place by June, so the application can go in early. A student who applies in mid-August is relying on luck.
What happens after you land in Ireland, and how do you register?
A visa lets you travel to Ireland, but the immigration officer at the airport decides whether to let you in. Then, within 90 days, you register your Stamp 2 permission and receive an IRP card.
At the Pakistani and Irish airports
FIA officers at the Pakistani airport check that your passport and visa are genuine. At the Irish border, ISD says you must satisfy the officer that you have a valid reason to enter, and advises carrying copies of your application documents. Keep your letter of acceptance, fee receipts, insurance and bank statements in your hand luggage.
Registering Stamp 2
As of 18 September 2026, ISD says you must register within 90 days of arrival. Since 13 January 2025, ISD rather than the Garda National Immigration Bureau handles first-time registration, and its student FAQ points students to the Registration Office at Burgh Quay, Dublin. You book an appointment in advance through ISD’s customer portal.
- Booking the appointment is free.
- The registration fee is EUR 300, paid by card at the appointment.
- Your photo and fingerprints are taken.
- The IRP card is posted to you, usually within 10 working days.
You renew the permission each year before it expires. Degree students must show progression in their studies to renew.
How many hours can you work on a Stamp 2 student permission?
As of 18 September 2026, ISD’s Stamp 2 conditions allow casual work of up to 20 hours a week during term and 40 hours a week during holidays. ISD defines the holidays as June, July, August and September, and 15 December to 15 January.
You cannot run a business or trade, and you cannot use public funds or public hospitals. ISD’s finance rules also say you must support yourself without relying on casual work, so part-time wages cannot replace the EUR 10,000 in your visa file. Stamp 2A students may not work at all.
After graduating, the Third Level Graduate Programme gives up to 12 months on Stamp 1G for a level 8 award, and up to 24 months for level 9 or above, within overall time limits on the student route.
What can you do if your Ireland study visa is refused?
Read the refusal letter first. It gives the reasons and says whether you can appeal. The June 2026 change that removed appeals applies to short stay visas, so long stay study refusals can usually still be appealed.
Appealing
As of 18 September 2026, ISD says an appeal must arrive within 2 months of the date on the refusal letter, and there is no fee. You write a signed letter with your full name, postal address, email and visa application transaction number, and explain why the decision should change, dealing with each reason in the letter. Appeals go by post only, to the address in the refusal letter. A parent, sponsor or legal representative can appeal on your behalf with your signed authorisation.
Appeal or reapply?
An appeal works when the officer missed or misread evidence you already sent. If the refusal exposed a real weakness, such as unexplained deposits or a missing gap explanation, a fresh application with better evidence is often the stronger route. A late appeal cannot change the decision, but you can still make a new, paid application.
The guide to a refused student visa explains how to match each refusal reason to new evidence. If your file had a UK route too, the UK study guide shows how that country treats the same questions.
How do you apply, step by step?
The order matters. Most refusals I see trace back to a step done out of sequence, usually money moved or fees paid in a rush at the end.
Choose a full-time course on the ILEP
Pick a full-time, daytime course that appears on the Interim List of Eligible Programmes. Check the college’s refund policy, learner protection and full list of costs before you pay anything.
Get your offer and pay the fees
Accept your offer and pay the fees by bank transfer to the college’s Irish account or through an approved student fee payment service. Pay in full if fees are under EUR 6,000, or at least EUR 6,000 if they are higher.
Prepare six months of bank statements
Show immediate access to at least EUR 10,000 for a one-year course, or EUR 833 a month for a stay of 8 months or less. Use six months of statements for you and each sponsor, explain large deposits, and complete the Summary of Finances form.
Build the rest of the file
Collect your passport with 12 months of validity after arrival, two photos, your English test certificate, academic results, medical insurance evidence, an application letter and an explanation of any gap in your education.
Apply on AVATS and book your VFS appointment
Complete the long stay D study visa form on AVATS up to 3 months before travel. Print, sign and date the summary form, then attend a VFS Global centre in Pakistan within 30 days of the online application.
Travel, then register within 90 days
Carry copies of your visa documents for border control. After arrival, book an appointment with Immigration Service Delivery, register your Stamp 2 permission, pay the EUR 300 fee and receive your IRP card by post.
What goes wrong most often?
Funds that appear just before the application
A sponsor’s account that sat at a few lakh rupees for five months and then jumps before the application raises the obvious question. ISD asks for every large or irregular deposit to be explained. Build the balance early, or document the sale or savings that produced it.
Fees paid to an agent, not the college
ISD wants proof of a transfer into the college’s Irish account or an approved payment service. A receipt from an agent’s office in Pakistan is not that proof. Pay the college directly, and check the college’s published list of agents before trusting anyone. The guide to checking a visa consultant sets out the other checks.
A gap left unexplained
Three years between a BCom and a master’s with no account of them leaves the officer to guess. Give the timeline, the employer letters and the salary evidence.
Hiding an old refusal
ISD says non-disclosure of any past refusal leads to refusal, and false information can bring a ban of up to 5 years. The old refusal is almost always less damaging than the lie.
Missing the VFS window
If the VFS appointment does not happen within 30 days of the online form, the application is treated as withdrawn. Students lose weeks starting again.
A realistic example
This is a hypothetical illustration, not a real client. Hamza, 26, from Faisalabad, has a BS in computer science from 2021 and has worked since then at a software house. He has an offer for a one-year MSc in data analytics at an Irish university, with fees above EUR 6,000. His father, a textile trader, will sponsor him.
- March. Hamza checks the course is on the ILEP and confirms his IELTS score meets the university’s requirement. He asks the university which HEC attestations it needs.
- April. He pays the deposit the university asks for, above EUR 6,000, by bank transfer to its Irish account, and gets a letter of acceptance showing the fees due and paid.
- April to May. His father’s business account and Hamza’s own salary account show steady activity. A deposit from the sale of a plot is backed by the sale deed and the transfer record.
- June. Hamza writes his application letter, a month-by-month history since 2021 with employer letters, and completes the Summary of Finances form. He arranges insurance.
- Mid-June. He completes AVATS, prints and signs the summary form, and attends VFS in Lahore eight days later.
- September. With a visa in his passport, he flies to Dublin, carries copies of his file, and books his registration appointment in his first week.
Nothing in his file is clever. Each document answers a question the officer is bound to ask.
The version that goes wrong
Now imagine his classmate Usman. An agent in Lahore takes his fee deposit in cash, promising to “forward it to the college”. His uncle lends PKR 5 million a week before the application and takes it back after. Usman left a Schengen refusal off the form because the agent said Ireland would not find out. Each of those facts is a ground for refusal on its own. Together, they also risk a 5-year ban.
Key takeaways
- Courses of more than 3 months need a long stay D study visa, and the course must be full-time and on the ILEP.
- As of 18 September 2026, show immediate access to EUR 10,000 for a one-year course, or EUR 833 a month for 8 months or less.
- Pay tuition in full if under EUR 6,000, or at least EUR 6,000 if higher, directly to the college or an approved payment service.
- Apply on AVATS, then attend a VFS Global centre in Pakistan within 30 days; Abu Dhabi does not list Pakistan.
- Send six months of statements for you and each sponsor, explain every large deposit, and account for every gap.
- Register Stamp 2 within 90 days of arrival and pay EUR 300; work is up to 20 hours in term and 40 in holidays.
- Long stay study refusals can usually be appealed within 2 months, free of charge.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need IELTS for an Ireland study visa from Pakistan?
You need a certificate from an accepted test provider for degree and most other courses, issued within 2 years of your course start date. As of 18 September 2026, the visa minimum for these courses is IELTS Academic 5.0, PTE Academic 30, TOEFL iBT 61 or Duolingo 75. Your college will usually ask for more.
How much bank balance is needed for an Ireland student visa?
As of 18 September 2026, Immigration Service Delivery asks visa-required students to show immediate access to at least EUR 10,000 for a course of one year, plus ready access to EUR 10,000 and the fees for each later year. For a stay of 8 months or less, the figure is EUR 833 a month, capped at EUR 6,665.
Do I have to pay the full tuition fee before applying?
Not always. If your fees are under EUR 6,000, you must pay them in full before you apply. If they are higher, you must pay at least EUR 6,000, and your letter of acceptance should show it. Your college may still ask for more, and the visa officer looks at your ability to pay the rest.
What is the Irish study visa fee for Pakistani students?
As of 18 September 2026, Immigration Service Delivery lists EUR 60 for a single entry visa and EUR 100 for a multiple entry visa. The fee is not refunded if the application is refused or withdrawn. The visa application centre adds its own service charge, so check the figure when you book.
Where do Pakistani students submit an Irish study visa application?
You apply online on AVATS, then follow your summary form. As of 18 September 2026, VFS Global describes itself as the official partner of the Embassy of Ireland in Pakistan, with centres in Islamabad, Karachi, Lahore and Mirpur. The Abu Dhabi visa office does not list Pakistan among the countries it handles.
How long does an Irish study visa take from Pakistan?
Immigration Service Delivery says to expect a decision within about 8 weeks from the date your application reaches the visa office. It can take longer if documents are missing or need checking. You can apply up to 3 months before travel, so apply as soon as your fees and funds are in place.
Can my father or uncle sponsor my Irish study visa?
Yes. Ireland allows a family member or friend to sponsor you, but you must prove the relationship, show how much each sponsor will give, and provide their six months of bank statements and income evidence. A NADRA Family Registration Certificate or birth certificate helps show the link to a parent.
How many hours can I work on Stamp 2 in Ireland?
Up to 20 hours a week during term, and up to 40 hours a week in June, July, August and September and between 15 December and 15 January. This applies to Stamp 2 students on ILEP courses. Stamp 2A students, on courses not on the ILEP, may not work at all.
How much is the IRP registration fee in Ireland?
As of 18 September 2026, Immigration Service Delivery’s student FAQ says the registration fee is EUR 300. You pay by card at your appointment, not when booking. You must register within 90 days of arrival, and the Irish Residence Permit card is posted to you, usually within 10 working days.
Can I appeal a refused Irish study visa?
Usually, yes. The June 2026 end of appeals applies to short stay visas, not long stay study visas. Your refusal letter says whether you can appeal. The appeal must arrive within 2 months of the date on the letter, it is free, and it goes by post to the address in the letter.
Can I bring my wife or children on an Irish student visa?
Generally no. Immigration Service Delivery’s student FAQ says students are typically not permitted to bring family members, apart from very exceptional circumstances. If you are married with children, plan your study around that rule rather than hoping for an exception, and ask the college before you pay.
Can Ch. Bilal Rasheed help me study in Ireland?
He offers a free first consultation in Lahore, on WhatsApp or by phone, with general guidance on courses, costs and the published visa rules. He is a qualified lawyer in Pakistan and an ICEF-accredited education consultant, not an Irish lawyer. No one can guarantee an Irish visa, and anyone who promises one is not being straight with you.
